ONE THINKS OF ANOTHER

Winston writes: As a brief overview, my work is always about text - whether it's inside the language, the typography of it or even the structure of the book itself.

I find that looking at how words behave can give a remarkable insight into underlying messages. This does not necessarily mean counting up words and seeing how many there are, but more of a lateral approach to language; a case of finding existing patterns and seeing what themes are prevalent.

I have worked on many different texts: originally with the dictionary and recently with fairy tales and myths. The reason why Art and Sacred Places seemed interesting is that the sacred and language have such a rich relationship. I also feel, the group that I was paired with (the Quakers on the Isle of White), shared this interest.

My impression of Quaker worship was that a lot of emphasis is placed on the meeting and the actual physical space isn't as important. To experience a meeting you have a real sense of spirit and this comes across especially when someone gives ministry. The use of language seemed to have a real resonance in the meetings and it was on this theme that I based my project.

I often find words on the page can lack the energy of the meanings they hold. In speech language seems to carry more character. On a simple visual level I was exploring this. In the artwork I did not use the words from the meetings but rather focused on certain types of words we use in the everyday.

In the context of a book - the work comes in the format of a play. It seemed to me the Quakers' worship held certain similarities with this art form. Neither put much resonance on the environment but rather focused instead on what happens in it.

Note: Newport Quaker Meetings are held in the Rope Store Gallery on Sundays
